2010 RESOLUTION: MORE SHOWS. LOTS MORE.

Spite makes our resolutions like everyone should: over several bottles of wine. Before the buzz could wear off, we packed our calendars with a bunch more shows. Want to see the ladies* of Spite in January? Here are your chances:
So there's really no excuse not to see some of the funny in January.

And if you want even more (along with guaranteed TMI), you can follow us on Twitter.

*As always, we use the term loosely.

SEE YOU IN JANUARY.

We're taking a much-needed break over the holidays, because all that eggnog and spiked cider and mulled wine DOES NOT DRINK ITSELF, PEOPLE.

But we'll be back in a whole new show at a whole new venue in January. And we're stupid excited about it.

Our friends at KC Crossroads Comedy have asked us to perform with a bunch of other great groups Saturdays at the Fishtank in the Crossroads. They'll kick things off January 2—our first show is Saturday, January 30, at 7pm. Also playing: Improv Thunderdome Team #9 and the brand new improv duo, beejay (one of those folks should look familar).

We've got a lot more in the works...including shows at another theater AND more videos. But first, we've got a date with some eggnog.

UPDATE! That other theater is the Roving Imp. (We've been dreaming of being able to make this announcement since the Imp Fest back in October.) Our first show is January 29, with another fabulous Imp troupe to be named later.

Happy holidays from Spite.

WE'RE CHEATING ON MEGAN IN A ONE-NIGHT STAND.

Megan's going home for the Thanksgiving holidays...and Nikki and Trish are playing with another chick. Monique Madrid, our makeover hair-and-makeup stylist, will join us on stage just as you're getting sick enough of your family to need an excuse to get the hell out.

But Mo's not coming here just to be our honorary boob-grabber. She and her fabulously talented husband, Corey, play together in Chicago as The Union and are bringing their sketch show, "A Very Civil War," straight from Second City's Donny's Skybox Theater.

The show is directed by award-winning Second City performer Amanda Blake Davis and lets the audience in on how the couple has to defend their race and ethnicity, takes them inside a marriage counseling session, and explores the ridiculous world of a late-night easy-listening DJ and a pick-up artist in the 17th century, and much more.

Corey will also join our bad-boy pals Loaded Dice in a completely improvised set.

Tickets are just $10 for all three sets. Call 816-678-8886 to reserve your seat. This show will contain adult material. It's all going down at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater, 4010 Pennsylvania.

SPITE KNOWS HOW YOU GET PREGNANT

We're pretty sure this is how it works.

SPITE PLAYS STEREOTYPES

We're not role models, people.

SPITE EXPLAINS "SIDE SADDLE"

At this point, we probably don't need to explain that our shows contain adult material.

SPITE MAKES IT INTO A MOVIE

The fabulous Jill Bernard makes a mini-doc as she travels across the country doing improv. She put a great big chunk of Spite in this one:

Making It Up As We Go: BONNER SPRINGS, KS from Jill Bernard on Vimeo.

You have 1 and 2/3rds chances to see us one more time before the end of the year. We'll be playing with our boy-parts in Tantrum Friday, November 13, at 8pm at the Westport Coffeehouse. Then Nikki and Trish will play with Megan's stand-in, Monique Madrid, in a show with Loaded Dice and Monique's boy-part, Corey (together, they're called The Union, and you can see their work here). That's Friday, November 27, at 8pm at WCH. Ditch your family and come watch. Tickets are $10 and you can make reservations by calling 816-678-8886.

ONLY TWO MORE SHOWS THIS YEAR

You've got two more chances* to see Spite perform this year—both coming up at the end of the month at the Imp Fest out in Bonner Springs.**

We're in two shows:

Thursday, Oct. 22, 8pm, $10
Anomaly Orange, Tantrum, TrivProv, Spite

Friday, Oct. 23, 7pm, $9 (all ages show, 12 & under in free with advance reservation)
Anomaly Orange, Biblioclast, Spite
***

Anomaly Orange is one of KC's newest groups, formed from the ashes of long-time troupe Hype 7. TrivProv and Bibliocast are duo shows featuring Roving Imp founder and director John Robison. And you know Tantrum, right?

Saturday, Oct. 24, 9pm, $12
One, Dictionary Soup, Brownies Don't Lie

Maybe you remember Brownies Don't Lie from last year. Minneapolis Improv Queen Jill Bernard returns to KC for the duo show The Second City's Dave Razowsky directed for her and Trish.

*We'll be one short for our post-Thanksgiving show, so we're going to do something really fun to make up for it. The show is still on—watch this space for news.
**Don't let "Bonner Springs" freak you out. It's not too much different from, say, driving from Midtown to Lenexa. It's a great little theater with a bar right next door. YOU CAN DO THIS.
***Yes, we know it's an all-ages show. We can handle it. We'll just use euphemisms.

ON OUR OWN.

The lovely Rita Marks took this photo at the KC Improv Festival. We'll be dressing ourselves again at our next show. Scroll down for a special offer (and all the details.)

Sunday, September 20, 2009

A SPECIAL DEAL FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE.

Want cheap tickets to our next show? Tell the person working the box office you think girls kick ass and get two-for-one admission. That's two people for 10 bucks—which is insanely cheap for this much funny.

Watch Spite get it on with Loaded Dice Friday, September 25, at 8pm at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater, 4010 Pennsylvania. Call 816-678-8886 for reservation. No little kids, please—it might get rough.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

GETTING OUR GIRL ON.

First of all, Spite got to work with one of the most bad-ass chicks in all of improv, Susan Messing (see her in this video shot at the festival). Because when one of the best teachers on the planet is in town, why the hell wouldn't you want to take advantage of it?

Her Gorgeous Ensembles class is all about movement and symmetry. We're going to try some.

+ + + + + + +

In other news, Spite is dressing ourselves these days...and getting rave reviews from our fans, who say everything from "fabulously dressed" to "you look like a slutty teenager."

See whether we decide to go glam or grrrl power at our next show.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

BACK WITH THE BAD BOYS.

Spite has invited the Bad Boys of KC Comedy—Loaded Dice—over to play again. They're fresh off their Mini-Dome victory at the KC Improv Festival's Thunderdome Thursday (which is too bad, because we really could have used that little gold cup to balance our other one, if you know what we mean).

Watch us get it on Friday, September 25, at 8pm at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater, 4010 Pennsylvania. Tickets are $10. Call 816-678-8886 for reservation. No little kids, please—we're going to play dirty.

And because we like you: Tell the person working the box office you think girls kick ass and get two-for-one admission.

Spite gets ready to throw down at 9:KCiF

Thursday, September 10, is Thunderdome Thursdsay at the KC Improv Festival.

And Spite has been selected to defend our Mini-Dome Championship, our pride and our honor against our pals in Loaded Dice, Babel Fish and Stitch-Tactics.

We're ready for whatever they throw at us.

THE MAKEOVER: WRAPUP.

Yes, yes, yes...there will be photos and videos. But our new look has resulted in a fabulous new fast-paced, chock-full social calendar, so they're not up yet.*

Thanks to everyone who came out. We had a blast playing, and there were no high-heel-related injuries.

Your next chances to see Spite (in new outfits, of course):

  • In a Thunderdome mini-match at the KC Improv Festival, Thursday, September 10, at 7pm.

*The truth is closer to "went on a business trip and left the cable at home."

Next Friday, Spite goes shopping with two of the coolest dressers we know. While they're doing research on street trends and cool-but-comfortable footwear, here's your chance to tell us what you think. What style advice do you have for Nikki, Megan and Trish? We'd love to hear your comments...

KC Magazine's nominations for Best of KC are open...and it sure would be nice if an improv group won. Vote right here.

OUR ROOTS.

In case you're curious.

Spite formed in part because we wanted to compete in Thunderdome and mostly because we never seemed to get enough stage time together playing with Tantrum

We didn't make it out of the preliminaries (a small matter of the audience voters being stacked something very close to 100:1), but we made an impact on Pitch reviewer and Thunderdome handicapper Alan Scherstuhl, who admonished audiences that, had they attended, "you would have laughed. Hard. Often. Maybe embarrassingly, spitting out your drink, needing a Kleenex once in a while."

Going into a short-season Mini-Dome, Alan put us at even odds with the eventual champion (and our 2009 show partners) Loaded Dice—this time, we took home the championship. And we did a few non-competitive sets, because by then we'd realized we weren't just playing around.

Spite's latest performance was a three-group show with local favorites Babel Fish and a duo between renowned Minneapolis' improviser Jill Bernard and Spite-ite Trish Berrong. We play once or twice a month with the boys of Tantrum, but can't wait to get the stage to ourselves again.

CHECK IT.

WE'RE BACK.

And we couldn't be more excited about it.

Coming in March, Spite begins Every Other Fourth Fridays* at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater. We'll be sharing the stage with Loaded Dice—the bad boys of improv. (They've got an Improv Thunderdome Championship Belt. We've got an Improv Mini-Dome Championship Cup. That's a lot of championship improv on one stage.)

Can't wait that long? We're the lady-parts of Tantrum—and our next shows are in February.

*It's not much of a mnemonic device, but it's what we've got.
